Dyspepsia, Epidemiology.Abstract
Introduction:"dyspepsia" comes from the Greek "dys" meaning bad or hard and "pepto" meaning cook or digest (bad digestion). It is very frequent in this environment and thus affects one fourth of the world population. Objective: to characterize the clinical, epidemiological and endoscopic aspects of functional dyspepsia in the upper digestive tract, in patients attending Abel Santamaría Cuadrado General Teaching Hospital of Pinar del Río, year 2013.
Method: a descriptive, prospective, longitudinal study was performed. The target group was made up of the 2100 patients, choosing intentionally as the sample 730 patients applying to Roma III criteria.
Results: the incidence of functional dyspepsia was higher in the female sex and in the age group 47-65 and 56-64 years old, respectively, with a 24.6% and an 18.4%, predominating over the male sex, between the fourth and the fifth decade. Helicobacter pylori infection and toxic habits as risk factors predominated in the male sex, while in the female sex were the consumption of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory with a 41%. The most frequent symptoms were: postprandial fullness (23%), early satiety (16.4%), and abdominal distention (14.7%). There were no correlation among the endoscopic symptoms and results but there did were among the symptoms and the Helicobacter pylori infection.
Conclusions: we noted the preponderance of patients between the fourth and fifth decade of life, with the highest frequency in the female sex and the presence of Helicobacter pylori infection.
