Abstract

Introduction: spinocerebellar ataxias are neurodegenerative disorders that are characterized by clinical, genetic and neuropathological heterogeneity. Its distinctive clinical features include gait ataxia, cerebellar dysarthria, dysmetria, dysdiadochokinesia, and postural tremor. In patients diagnosed with spinocerebellar ataxia, sleep disturbances affect their quality of life.

Objective: to evaluate the quality of sleep in patients diagnosed with spinocerebellar ataxia at the Institute of Neurology and Neurosurgery between the months of February 2023 and December 2023.

Methods: an observational, descriptive, cross-sectional study was carried out between February 2023 and December 2023 at the INN. We worked with a universe of 13 patients. Purposive sampling and non-parametric analysis of the results were used. To evaluate sleep quality, the Horne and Ostberg Morningness – Eveningness questionnaires, Pittsburg Sleep Quality Index, and Epworth Sleep Scale were used.

Results: the study showed a predominance of the female sex compared to the male sex with more pronounced sleep disorders. 38,4 % of patients had pathological drowsiness. Approximately 61,5 % of patients were treated with medications with anticholinergic load, among which antihypertensives predominated. Of these, more than 50 % had abnormal sleep quality.

Conclusions: the patients with spinocerebellar ataxia evaluated are affected by sleep disorders; fact more notable in women. The presence of comorbidities and administration of medications with anticholinergic load has an impact on sleep consolidation in patients affected by the pathology in question.
