Introduction: nowadays it is evident the need to use morphometry to measure parameters at cellular level, and to reduce the margin of error of histopathological diagnosis in tumor processes such as lung cancer.
Objective: to determine morphometric and densitometric parameters of small cell and non-small cell lung carcinoma.
Methods: an observational, descriptive and cross-sectional study on the morphometric and densitometric characteristics of small cell and non-small cell lung carcinoma was carried out. We worked with 100 % of the universe; conformed by the totality of diagnosed patients (49), in the General Hospital Juan Bruno Zayas Alfonso of Santiago de Cuba during the year 2022. The digital processing of the images was carried out using the ImageJ program version 1,44. The following nuclear variables were determined: area, perimeter, volume, major and minor diameter, circularity and integrated optical density.
Results: the predominant histological type was non-small cell lung carcinoma (87,8 %). The arithmetic mean values of area, perimeter, nuclear volume, major and minor diameter were lower in microcytic carcinoma and the integrated optical density was higher than in non-small cell lung carcinoma, in correspondence with the qualitative morphological alterations; there were representative discrepancies between both histological varieties, which resulted in a significant difference between the two types of carcinoma.
Conclusions: nuclear morphometric parameters of both histopathological types of lung cancer were determined by an economic and reproducible method, which would complement the cytohistological diagnosis.
