Abstract
Se presentan los resultados de una investigación descriptiva y transversal realizada en el área urbana del Policlínico Dr. Modesto Gómez Rubio del municipio de San Juan y Martínez de enero a diciembre de 1999, con el objetivo de identificar los factores biosociales que influyen en el destete precoz y probar si guarda relación o no con las variables estudiadas y el tipo de amamantamiento. Los datos se obtuvieron a través de un cuestionario aplicado a las madres y la revisión de las Historias Clínicas, donde apreciamos que la mayoría de estas efectúan el destete antes de los cuatro meses de vida, el parto pretérmino influyó de forma negativa en el amamantamiento, sin embargo, es de destacar la duración de las madres de mas de 35 años y las amas de casa. Existe dependencia entre el funcionamiento familiar y la duración de la lactancia materna y que la causa que mas afectó fue la hipogalactia referidas por las madres. Dichos datos se computarizaron y se le aplicó el método estadístico Chi Cuadrado y el resultado se expresa a través de tablas.

ABSTRACT
The results of a transversal descriptive research is carried out in the urban area of Modesto Gómez Rubio, M.D. of San Juan y Martínez Municipality from January to December 1999 is aimed at the identification of biosocial factors influencing early weaning and to prove it is related to the studied variables and the breast feeding period. Data were obtained by means of a test applied to mothers and the review of the Medical Histories, where it is observed that most of the mothers carry out weaning before four months of life, the pre _ term delivery had a negative influence upon feeding, however, it is to be outlined that this lasted longer in mothers older than 35 years and housewives. There is dependence between family function and duration of breast-feeding and the cause affecting the most was hypogalactia referred by mothers. These data were computerized, Chi Square method was applied and the result was expressed by means of tables.
