Clinical-epidemiologic characterization of suicide attempt in La Coloma town

Introduction: prevalence of suicide has increased considerably during the last years, turning into a current health problem.Objective: to characterize clinical-epidemiologic aspects of suicide attempt in la Coloma town in Pinar del Rio municipality during January 2009-March 2012.
Method: a descriptive-cross sectional study which target group was comprised of 37 suicide attempts and the sample included 35. A structured interview was applied to the total of the sample, along with the test of Perception of Family Functioning (FF-SIL). Sex, age, marital status, suicide method used, associated risk factors as well as the degree of familial functioning.
Results: female sex and ages from 15 to 24 years old and single status prevailed, female sex used moderate or not so lethal methods, and male sex used rougher and lethal methods, depression was the most frequent risk factor and dysfunctional families prevailed.
Conclusions: knowing of the epidemiologic behavior of suicide attempt this conduct can be prevented in primary health care, to subsequently avoid the commit of suicide.
