Abstract

Introduction: the set of risk factors which may lead to ischemic heart failure, diabetes and diseases related to overweight is known as metabolic syndrome.
Objective: to determine the presence of risk factors related to metabolic syndrome and its prevalence in old people.
Material and methods: an observational, descriptive and cross sectional study was carried out in subjects from 60 years old or older attending to two doctors’ offices at "Luis Augusto Turcios Lima" university polyclinic in Pinar del Río.
Results: hypertension and diabetes mellitus developed in the 60% of old people included in the investigation and coexisting in 19.2% of them. Hypertension and ischemic heart disease showed no significant differences in both sexes. Diabetes mellitus prevailed in female sex. Obesity, diabetes and hypertension did not have any association. Prevalence of metabolic syndrome was 78.9% in female sex, while in males 52.3%, significantly higher among female population, which increased with age. The comparison in each group of ages, according to sex, was significant for the group of 60-64 years old, female population showed a greater prevalence concerning metabolic syndrome.
Conclusions: a high figure of hypertensive patients with cardiovascular disease and diabetes was detected. Considering each metabolic disorders, as it is usually associated with metabolic syndrome, it is necessary learning about their correlation for not treating them separately. Its prevalence increases with age.
