Behavior of Recurrent Postsurgical Intracranial Meningiomas

Abstract

Introduction: histological stage and extent of initial surgical resection has been considered decisive prognostic factors in meningiomas.
Objective: to determine the behavior of recurrent intracranial meningiomas operated at Abel Santamaría Cuadrado Hospital during the period 2010-2013.
Method: a quasi-experimental, descriptive and applied longitudinal study was carried out. The study group consisted of 46 patients operated at the Neurosurgery Service, while the sample comprised 8 relapsing patients who met the inclusion criteria. Specific data is collected from the individuals´ medical records. A database was compiled to facilitate information processing, with the help of the professional software SPSS 15.0. To carry out the analysis we used comparison test of proportions for independent samples.
Results: the degree of recurrence is higher in the skull base (50%) and in the parasagittal region (33.3%). More than 50% of the operated cases belong to stage I, while those who relapsed were in stages II and III (62.5%). The shortest time for recurrence was 14 and 6 months in patients with high-grade malignancy and subtotal removal. The site of recurrence was more related to the temporal area of the skull base and the greater wing of the sphenoid.
Conclusions: the recurrence of intracranial meningiomas was associated with the histological stage, tumor resection, the surgical technique used and the approach, regardless of the extent of surgical resection.
