The costs of Medical Genetic Care for pregnant women in Pinar del Río province

Introduction: currently the continuous increase in the cost of health care is a global concern; hence it is necessary to achieve economic awareness among health professionals.Objective: to analyze the costs of Medical Genetic Care for pregnant women presenting high genetic risk in the provincial service of Medical Genetics during 2014.
Material and methods: a retrospective study was conducted in the field of economic assessment in health care. It is a descriptive study of costs of consultations from the identification of the problems in the service. Ranking method was used to prioritize problems.
Results: The total cost of diagnostic prenatal ultrasound for high-risk pregnant women was $ 14.03 for every 5 of them, $ 2.81 each one. The estimated costs of amniocentesis consultation were $ 934.58 for 15 patients, concerning the diagnosis of hemoglobinopathies the expenses reached $ 634.57.
Conclusions: the average cost obtained to perform genetic tests was $ 360.44 CUP for every pregnant woman presenting high genetic risk and attending to the provincial service of Medical Genetics in Pinar del Río during 2014, which allowed to carry out a comparative analysis and budgetary economic assessments, as well as to weight up the quality of medical care for this important program.
