Abstract
El ejercicio físico puede ayudar no sólo a conseguir y mantener un estado de completo bienestar físico, mental y social, sino también a disfrutar plenamente de la vida. Por ello se realizó un estudio con el objetivo de valorar la efectividad del mismo en la longevidad. Fueron encuestados 56 ancianos que representan el universo de los que asisten al Círculo de Abuelos de los consultorios 42, 68, 71 y 71, correspondientes al Policlínico "Hermanos Cruz" de Pinar del Río, en los meses de octubre a diciembre de 2004. Las variables utilizadas fueron: edad, sexo, tiempo que lleva practicando ejercicios, utilidad y satisfacción que este le reporta a su salud, así como el papel de la enfermera en dicha actividad. Del total de ancianos 40 son del sexo femenino (71.42 %), con predominio del grupo de 60 a 64 años (32, 51.14 %), y 32 (55.35 %) llevan de 3 a 5 años incorporados a la práctica de ejercicios físicos. El apoyo y la atención de la enfermera de la familia es considerada por estos ancianos como de importancia vital en dicha actividad, logrando una mejoría del estado general de salud en el 100 % de los casos.

ABSTRACT
Physical exercise can help not only to achieve and maintain a complete physical, mental and social wellbeing but also to enjoy a healthy fully life. A research aimed at assessing the effectiveness of physical exercises in the elderly was conducted with 56 old people registered in the Circle of the Elderly belonging to Doctor's Offices (No. 42, 68, 71) at Hermanos Cruz Outpatient Clinic in Pinar del Río during October to December 2004. The variables analyzed were: age, sex, length of time in practicing exercises, usefulness, level of satisfaction and health and the role of family nurses in the activity, 40 female patients (71.42 %) represented the study group prevailing 60 to 64 years old (32) 51.14 % and 32 (55.35 %) were practicing physical exercises during 3 to 5 years. The support and care of the family nurse were considered of a great importance achieving a general wellbeing in the 100% of the cases.
