Abstract

Introduction: hypertension or high blood pressure is considered a complex disease of multifactorial origin. In Cuba, it has been a priority for Medical Genetics, since there are few studies addressing the genetic risk factors of this entity that would serve to design genetic control strategies for affected families.

Objective: to demonstrate whether there is a preferential grouping of hypertension in the families studied.

Method: an observational, analytical study of cases and controls was designed in the health area of “19 de abril Polyclinic” Plaza de la Revolución Municipality throughout 2013 and 2015. The sample of 80 cases and 160 controls was obtained by simple random sampling, the first, second and third degree-blood generations were assessed with the index case.

Results: the frequency of affected persons was higher in the cases group than in the control, the 25.6 % of first-degree relative cases and 19.0 % for controls were also hypertensive (OR: 3.78, 95% CI: 1.77-9.14, p = 0.002). Family prevalence of high blood pressure per 100 inhabitants was higher in first-degree relatives. It was demonstrated that individuals with a family history of hypertension presented a statistically significant risk for hypertension (OR: 1.46, 95% CI: 1.14-1.86, p <0.01), which shows the existence of familial aggregation of the disease.

Conclusions: it was concluded that there is a family aggregation in hypertensive patients, which may be the first evidence of a disease with an important hereditary component.
