Keywords:
LASER THERAPY/method, PERICORONITIS/drug therapy, PATIENT.Abstract
Introduction: pericoronaritis is an acute infectious process that appears in young patients between the second and third decade of life due to eruption of the third molars.
Objective: to determine the efficacy of laser therapy in the treatment of pericoronaritis.
Methods: quasi-experimental study of therapeutic intervention in patients who attended the stomatological emergency service of the University Teaching Polyclinic "Turcios Lima", in the period from January 2022 to February 2023. The universe consisted of 80 patients diagnosed with pericoronaritis who intentionally coincided with the sample, which was divided into two groups (study and control) of 40 patients. The study group was indicated antibiotic therapy and low power laser with a Cuban LASERMED 670 DL equipment, local punctual technique was used around the dental cap with analgesic and anti-inflammatory parameters (30 mw, 36 sec) and laserpuncture was applied. In the control group, conventional therapy with antibiotic therapy and hydrogen peroxide was applied. The chi-square test and the percentage were used as summary measures.
Results: the treatment of pericoronaritis with laser therapy was highly effective, which was statistically demonstrated with the chi-square test of independence.
Conclusions: the efficacy of laser therapy treatment was proved, since it was reported a marked remission of symptoms, inflammation, pain and a decrease in the number of treatment sessions, so it is recommended as a therapeutic option.
