Introduction: social networks are tools used in daily life for different activities; however, their indiscriminate use has serious long-term consequences.
Objective: to determine the influence of social networks on the academic life of dental students.
Methods: descriptive study, with a quantitative approach, developed in second semester dental students. From a universe of 120 students, a sample of 91 students who met the selection criteria was selected on a non-probabilistic basis, by convenience. The application of a survey allowed data collection, using descriptive statistical methods. Medical ethics were respected.
Results: 56,0 % of the students were 18-20 years old, being the female sex the most representative (74,7 %). 74,7 % of the respondents reported using social networks, with Tik Tok being the most used (61,5 %). 65,9 % of the students used social networks for entertainment purposes at the university (56,0 %), with 86,8 % detailing how the use of social networks had affected their academic performance. In contrast, 53,6 % had an average of more than eight points, while 18,7 % had an average of less than seven points.
Conclusions: the study allowed us to characterize the students, determining that the influence of social networks does not affect the academic performance of students.
