Interoperability in the health field: integration of medical devices and information systems
Keywords:
HEALTH INFORMATION INTEROPERABILITY, ELECTRONIC HEALTH RECORDS, INFORMATION SYSTEMS.Abstract
Introduction: the use of information and communications technologies, in the field of medical sciences, has caused an exponential increase in the data offered by medical devices.
Objective: describe the characteristics of interoperability between medical devices and information systems.
Methods: for the realization, 97 scientific articles were consulted, obtained from the EBSCO, Medline, Pubmed, Scopus and Scielo databases, predominating those published in the last five years, which was complemented by the review of international reports and theses on the subject. 52 sources were selected to carry out the review, taking into consideration their scientific relevance.
Development: interoperability between medical devices and information systems arises in a context nuanced by a great diversity of said devices used in the medical care environment. For its correct implementation in this area, it is necessary to understand the architectures and technologies necessary in the systems used, which in itself guarantees a correct flow of information between these devices and the information systems, for subsequent processing and analysis, for an adequate clinical management of the patient. Added to this is the need to guarantee security conditions that allow adequate data exchange.
Conclusions: the review allowed us to conclude that interoperability is essential to guarantee adequate communication between information systems and medical devices in the healthcare environment, allowing for improved coordination of medical care and the patient's health status.
