Introduction: the dental care of patients with periodontal disease and diabetes mellitus, classified as a risk group, is a fundamental task where it is necessary to achieve lifestyle changes. Objective: to develop an algorithm for the integral and intersectoral care of periodontal patients with diabetes mellitus.
Methods: a descriptive and transversal study was carried out at the ¨3 de octubre¨ Stomatological Teaching Clinic of the Tunas Municipality, Las Tunas province, during the period from January 2022 to January 2023. The population consisted of a total of 120 patients with a confirmed diagnosis of diabetes mellitus. From the database made with Microsoft Office Excel and Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS), version 15.0 with Windows 7 Operating System, frequency distributions and crosses of variables according to their different attributes were obtained.
Results: of the 120 patients with a diagnosis of diabetes mellitus, 117 were found to have periodontal disease (97,5 %). The algorithm for the integral care of periodontal patients with diabetes mellitus was designed, the information obtained was duly triangulated and subjected to a thorough content analysis and preparation of the algorithm taking into account the Cuban Standard ISO 9000-2 of 1999 and ISO 10014:2006, the evaluation and elaboration by experts of the final algorithm based on the difficulties encountered.
Conclusions: the algorithm proposed, according to the experts' evaluation, was considered adequate.
