Characterization of anemia in elderly hospitalized at the Hospital Clínico Quirúrgico Docente León Cuervo Rubio

Introduction: anemia is a frequent disease in the elderly and at the same time a risk factor for other diseases and complications that affect morbimortality during this stage of life.
Objective: to clinically and epidemiologically characterize anemia in elderly hospitalized at León Cuervo Rubio Hospital in Pinar del Río, during the first semester of the year 2024.
Methods: observational, descriptive and transversal study. The universe of 1346 elderly people admitted to the Internal Medicine service of the referred hospital, during the selected period and the intentional sample of 57 patients who fulfilled the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The research variables were obtained from the patients' medical records, descriptive statistical methods were used and the ethical principles of the Declaration of Helsinki were respected.
Results: anemia occurred more frequently in elderly people between 60 and 69 years of age (43,85 %), female (54,39 %). Cutaneomucosal pallor (78,95 %) was the most frequent sign. Microcytosis and hypochromia in the peripheral lamina were predominant (45,61 %). The most frequent causes of anemia were inflammatory (33,33 %) and the main complications were infections (50,88 %).
Conclusions: anemia in the elderly hospitalized at the León Cuervo Rubio Hospital in Pinar del Río, predominated in the 60-69 age group, female, with cutaneomucous pallor, inflammatory cause and infections were the most frequent complications.
