Characterization of women with preconception risk in the Turquino Plan, Fomento municipality

Introduction: maternal and child health in Latin America and the Caribbean faces critical challenges with high rates of maternal morbidity and mortality, highlighting the need to analyze preconception risk.
Objective: to characterize women of childbearing age with preconception risk in Plan Turquino, municipality of Fomento, during 2023.
Methods: a descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted that included 345 women of childbearing age with preconception risk who were intentionally selected. Data were collected using a structured interview and analysis of individual medical records. Variables such as age, education, parity, causes, contraceptive methods, and control of preconception risk were studied.
Results: the majority of women with preconception risk were adolescents aged 15 to 19 years (37,6 %) with secondary education (53,9 %) and nulliparous women (54,2 %). The main risk factor identified was adolescence (37,6 %), followed by anemia (15,6 %). Among the contraceptive methods used, the IUD was the most prevalent (43,4 %), while 55,4 % of women had no control over the risk.
Conclusions: the findings indicate a high preconception risk in nulliparous adolescents with secondary school education. Anemia and age over 35 years are also shown as prevalent risks. Although most use IUD as a contraceptive method, they do not have control over the reproductive risk. This highlights the urgent need to implement sexual education programs to improve women's health.
