Introduction: Verbesina persicifolia is a plant traditionally used for the treatment of various diseases.
Objective: to evaluate the anxiolytic effect of Verbesina persicifolia in ovariectomized Wistar rats.
Methods: experimental study in the period 2021-2023, the open field, black-white and elevated arm maze models were used. First, a single administration of Verbesina persicifolia was applied in the light-dark model and in the raised-arm maze model, the doses evaluated were 0.12, 0.25, 0.50 and 1.00 g/kg; including diazepam (2 mg/kg) and fluoxetine (10 mg/kg) as positive controls. In addition, the efficacy of chronic Verbesin persicifolia infusion treatment (0.25 g/kg/day, 21 days) was evaluated in the light-dark and elevated arm maze models.
Results: the findings show that in the light-dark model, the administration of the infusion gradually decreased the time spent in the illuminated compartment throughout the treatment, relative to the effect produced by diazepam. In the elevated arm maze model, it was observed that Verbesina persicifolia showed a greater anxiolytic effect of diazepam by increasing the time spent in the open arms. The results indicated that fluoxetine had no effect on the behavioral models used.
Conclusions: the infusion of Verbesina persicifolia produces a better anxiolytic effect at experimental level than diazepam when administered acutely, in contrast, it loses its anxiolytic efficacy in a chronic regimen with respect to diazepam.
