Abstract

Introduction: the inadequate level of knowledge about hypertension requires the development of strategies to increase it, allowing the establishment of attitudes and behaviors that allow better control of the disease.

Objective: to evaluate the impact of an educational intervention to increase knowledge of hypertension.

Methods: non-observational study (intervention-action), longitudinal prospective, developed between 2021 and 2023, in a sample of 140 hypertensive patients, from the 59th clinic of the Luis Augusto Turcios Lima Polyclinic. The research had three stages, using theoretical and empirical methods. The documentary review and the application of instruments allowed the collection of information that led to the variables analyzed, using descriptive and inferential statistical methods.

Results: the sample was predominantly female (70,7 %), with  a  mean age  of 53,7 years, 32,9 % had a pre-university or intermediate technical education. Of the patients, 55,0 % had no blood pressure control, 52,9 % had an average level of knowledge, and 50,7 % had partial adherence to medication. Higher percentages of adherence were found in individuals with high and moderate levels of knowledge (p=0,031), with a detailed relationship between a high level of knowledge and blood pressure control (p=0,005). The educational intervention significantly increased the percentage of patients with a high level of knowledge (31,4 % to 59,3 %; p=0,029).

Conclusions: the modifications reported in the level of knowledge about the disease indicate that the intervention applied was satisfactory.
