Introduction: the adequate performance of the General Comprehensive Dentistry specialist is essential to ensure the early detection of oral manifestations of the human immunodeficiency virus.
Objective: to design a professional development strategy to improve the performance of the General Comprehensive Dentist in the early diagnosis of oral manifestations of the human immunodeficiency virus.
Methods: an observational, descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted with an intentional sample of 53 General Comprehensive Dentistry specialists and 11 administrators from dental clinics in the municipality of Pinar del Río. Documentary analysis, surveys, interviews, and scientific observation were applied to obtain information corresponding to the variables analyzed. Data were processed using descriptive statistics and methodological triangulation.
Results: deficiencies were identified in training and updating related to oral manifestations of the human immunodeficiency virus, with limited correspondence between actual needs and professional development activities, as well as restricted use of technologies and active methods. A generally low adequacy level was found in methodological and developmental indicators, although certain strengths emerged regarding willingness to learn and recognition of training needs. Triangulation confirmed gaps in planning, implementation, and relevance of the process, along with shortcomings in promotion, prevention, and systematic updating activities.
Conclusions: significant deficiencies were identified in the professional development process of General Comprehensive Dentists for the early detection of oral manifestations of the human immunodeficiency virus, supporting the need to develop an educational strategy to improve the quality of care in primary health care settings.
