Introduction: bruxism is a multifactorial disorder that affects masticatory function and quality of life, requiring effective therapeutic alternatives.
Objective: to describe the effectiveness of botulinum toxin as a complementary treatment to the use of myorelaxant splints in patients with bruxism.
Methods: a bibliographic search was conducted in various databases following the PRISMA guidelines. The process included the identification and selection of existing sources, which allowed for the subsequent analysis of the available literature to adequately develop the topic addressed.
Development: evidence indicates that botulinum toxin type A reduces the frequency of bruxism episodes, decreases pain, and improves sleep quality when combined with occlusal splints. Clinical effects are most noticeable during the first three months, with a progressive decline thereafter, suggesting the need for periodic applications. Benefits have been reported in reducing bite force and muscle activity, although doubts remain regarding its long-term efficacy. The literature agrees that its use is safe and well tolerated, but standardized protocols are required to optimize clinical outcomes.
Conclusions: botulinum toxin represents an effective adjuvant therapeutic option in the management of bruxism, especially in severe cases. Its combination with myorelaxant splints enhances results, although further studies are needed to define sustainable application guidelines.
