El objetivo de esta investigación fue determinar las complicaciones por fracturas de cadera en la provincia de Pinar del Río en el período de Agosto de 1996-Agosto de 1997. Se realizó un estudio descriptivo y prospectivo y se determinó las complicaciones presentadas en los pacientes ingresados en el Servicio de Ortopedia y Traumatología del Hospital Docente Clínico Quirúrgico "Abel Santamaría" en el período de Agosto de 1996 a Agosto de 1997. Para recabar la información se utilizó una encuesta validada previamente. Los resultados obtenidos muestran que la anemia post-hemorrágica aguda representó el 27,9 % de las complicaciones y que las mismas guardaron relación directa con una larga estadía. Los resultados destacaron la necesidad de establecer estrategias tanto en el nivel primario como en el nivel secundario de atención.
