Aimed at specifying the role of some modifiable risk factors in the progress of the crisis of hypertension at "Hermanos Cruz" health area, Pinar del Rio, a retrospective and analytic study was carried in three (3) family-medical offices from March 2008 to March 2010. The target group was comprised of 15 years old or older patients and the sample included 608 hypertensive patients chosen at random, who were appointed to two groups: those presenting crisis of hypertension in the period of the study and those who did not. A medical interview and a physical examination were conducted, together with a review of the medical histories to achieve variables of interest, where 55, 6% belonged to male sex and (p=0,027) was statistically significant. Ages from 45 years old or older up to 55 years old was the group of ages having more patients 29.1% (p=0,015), 12, 82% suffered from crisis of hypertension, emergencies were the most frequent (X2 =31.57; p=7. 19E-09); alcoholism (X2 =114.24; p=1.15E-26) and no practice of physical exercises (X2 =5.01; p=0, 02) prevailed. Modifiable risk factors still remain in hypertensive patients. Primary health care can take health actions to diminish the crisis of hypertension which is a life threatening condition.Downloads
