Application of the program for the early detection of oral cancer
Abstract

A retrospective study was made of the total of patients (788) older than 15 years old inscribed in the archive of the Provincial Oncology Unit who has malignant neoplasm of the head and neck in the different locations from 1982 to 1996, the activity was evaluated according to the Program for the Early Detection of Cancer taking into account the clinical stage in which 54 % of the patients were seen in clinical stages III and IV, 38 % in the stages I and II with an evolution according to the municipal rate of incidence which was quite low. 56,3 % of the patients died or were alive with non controlled diseases, 38 % were free of neoplasia, the latter were mostly represented by patients whose diagnosis was made in stages I and II. Conclusion is made that function (activity) of this program is defective since its reason of being is to avoid the appearance of the malignant disease or its detection in early stages and this is not being achieved.
