Introduction: chromosomal abnormalities are changes that affect the number and structure of the chromosomes and the risk increases with extreme ages of life, amniocentesis is an important prenatal cytogenetic diagnostic technique.
Objective: to analyze the behavior of prenatal cytogenetic diagnosis program in Pinar del Rio province in terms of group of ages when pregnant women are recruited as well as causes to indicate the amniocentesis and the main results of the test.
Material and methods: a descriptive, retrospective and longitudinal study was conducted; it included the total to pregnant women, who underwent amniocentesis during the years 2008 through 2012 in the 11 municipalities of Pinar del Río province by analyzing the main parameters related to cytogenetic prenatal diagnosis.
Results: 32.9% of pregnant women recruited corresponded to Pinar del Río municipality, which includes four health areas and constitutes the provincial capital, the program has a coverage of 83.04%, advanced maternal age is the main indicator and 30 chromosomal abnormalities have been diagnosed.
Conclusions: pregnant women manifested the acceptance of the procedure, showing that advanced maternal age is the main cause to perform such procedure, some chromosomal abnormalities have been diagnosed and the fulfillment of the program has contributed to the improvement of child-maternal indicators.
