The extensionist process at Pinar del Río University of Medical Sciences

Introduction: the university should take and attitude of social transformation and change, from an increasingly comprehensive training and a consequent ethical awareness. The extension process, by its nature and purpose, has the leading role to face from the universities a new stage of development and expanding access to comprehensive culture.Objective: to assess the current situation of the management of the extension process in the new Pinar del Rio Medical University.
Methods: pedagogical research based on the dialectical-materialist method which analyzes different documentary sources, surveys on teachers, review of the minutes of the board of directors, expanded interviews with students and members of the department of extension, and further observations were made to the extension process.
Results: it revealed a set of trends and regularities in the extension process management at the University of Medical Sciences of Pinar del Rio, showing contradictions between the administrative and technological dimensions and the need to base a management model in university extension as a process and to propose and evaluate a methodology for the introduction of the management model of university extension in the new Medical University of Pinar del Río.
Conclusions: university extension is not assumed as a leader in the design, development and socialization of health public culture to the whole health system and intra and extra university community in general educational process.
