History of the monument and bust erected to honor Dr. Leon Cuervo Rubio in Pinar del Rio

The names of the institutions are not apart from the local history of people. The medical community of Pinar del Rio has a reason to be proud of the identity of one of its hospitals named: Leon Cuervo Rubio, it is a history to be remembered. After Dr. Leon Cuervo Rubio demise, a monument with his bust was erected at La Colonia Española Sanatorium, an institution that he led for more than 30 years.
In order preserved the historical memory and the significance of this event, an ethnographic research was conducted based on the review of documents, the testimony of doctors and other people who support these moments.
Before 1959 the commemorative events were held on the anniversaries of his death at the monument; that tradition was gradually lost till the demolition and removal of the bust. The historian Gerardo Ortega found the abandoned bust which managers and workers rescued for its placement in the hospital that holds his name. The undeniable values transcending the local history made possible this achievement, but there is a persistent dissatisfaction as it was placed without a pedestal, which is not in harmony with the relevant and professional magnitude of the figure and to pass on to future generations. Directive from the hospital and from Cultural Heritage in the province manage projects for a proper mound to place it, perhaps not similar to the original, but with the symbolism of Pinar del Rio people covering the historical significance of the memory of Dr. Leon Cuervo Rubio as an eminent physician who made his profession a true priesthood perpetuated in the institution holding his name.
