Introduction: Burkitt's lymphomais a neoplasm with a high degree of malignancy; its clinical and histopathological features have not been previously described in Nampula, Mozambique.
Objective: to characterize Burkitt's lymphoma considering its clinical and histological features in Nampula, Mozambique, during the years 2012 and 2013.
Method: a descriptive, retroprospective study was carried out with a target group comprised of pediatric patients presenting tumor mass in cervical, facial, oropharyngeal and abdominal regions (N = 75) these patients attended the Central Hospital of Nampula, Mozambique, during the period 2012 to 2013. The sample included those patients diagnosed by fine-needle-aspiration biopsy and the status was confirmed by histological studies (n = 60). A computerized database was created collecting the data of the variables used, which were summarized by absolute and relative percentage frequencies.
Results: the highest frequency of cases were found in children under 6 years of both sexes, the mean time between the onset of symptoms and the pathological diagnosis was long, the largest group matched up 3 months and more; 31.6% of patients died, the most frequent cause was the impediment of admittance to the health services, malnutrition and treatment discontinuation.
Conclusions: early care and treatment are imperative to prevent the lethality of this disease, as well as providing accessibility to health care services for its opportune diagnosis all over the country.
