Temporomandibular joint dysfunctions in dentistry emergency service: Ormani Arenado Dentistry Clinic, Pinar del Río 2015

Introduction: temporomandibular joint dysfunctions constitute a health problem in Dentistry emergency services; which are the most common causes of facial pain after dental pain.
Objective: to determine the behavior of temporomandibular joint dysfunctions at the Dentistry emergence service in Pinar del Rio municipality.
Method: a prospective, descriptive study of all patients attending the emergency department at Ormani Arenado Teaching Dentistry Clinicin the health area of Raul Sanchez university polyclinic during January to December 2015 . The target group consisted of 1 202 patients attending the emergency services and the sample included 100 patients presetting inclusion criteria and giving their consent to participate in the study.
Results: female gender predominated with 80% of patients and the age group of 31-41 years old with 46%, with a period of previous suffering between 1 to 3 months in 32%; anxiety was present as the main cause in 54% of patients, followed by 46% of bruxism, at palpation tenderness of muscles predominated in 89% of patients, followed by a deviation of the midline with 70 % of the investigated sample.
Conclusions: temporomandibular joint dysfunctions (TMJD) are frequent from the third decade of life; female gender is the most affected group, where stress plays a major role.
