Epidemiological burden vs economic burden of smoking due to morbidity

Introduction: in the current context, studies concerning the burden of disease are becoming more indispensable due to their importance for public health and decision making, a situation where smoking is not excluded as a risk factor. In the particular case of studies about the economic burden of smoking by morbidity, it has been observed that the conceptual application of the burden of disease to economic studies has not been precise, since passive smokers are not included in the studies and because the studies attributed the smoking habit only to the economic responsibility.
Objective: to formulate the economic burden of smoking for active and passive smokers.
Methods: the theoretical methods used were: the comparative one to extract the advantages and disadvantages of the method used in the calculation of direct cost, analysis - synthesis for the study and formulation of the burden of smoking; bibliographic review was used as empirical method.
Results: a new formulation was obtained for the estimation of the economic burden of smoking due to its morbidity.
Conclusion: the application of the new formulation will allow a more accurate estimation, the impact of smoking on human health and on the economy from the conceptual and practical point of view.
