The role of fiscal authorities in the control of smoking

Introduction: the efficient role played by fiscal policy in the control of smoking can be crucial due to the impact that this risk factor has on the economy and society in general. However, because of the limited perception, generally shown about smoking, the need of describing the impact of smoking on the economy in general becomes evident, to be aware of the most efficient intervention of fiscal policy in the control of smoking.
Objective: to describe the efficient role of fiscal policy in the control of smoking.
Method: theoretical methods (historical-logical) were used to carry out the disaggregation by stages of the impact of smoking on the economy; comparative to establish the similarities and differences between the different stages regarding the impact of smoking on the economy and bibliographic review as empirical method.
Results: it was described how smoking impacts on the economy according to the levels of consumption, making a breakdown by stages.
Conclusion: the most efficient fiscal policy in the control of smoking from the economic point of view would be the one that eradicates any degree of exposure to secondhand smoke and that the average consumption is no greater than the minimum level of consumption, to make effective the demands stated by the public health policies regarding any causes derived from smoking.
