Burnout syndrome in pediatric onco-hematology service

Introduction: the study of Burnout could be focused as a current health problem, due to its high prevalence in diverse professionals around the world and the high rates of affectations in workers from the health care services.
Objective: to characterize burnout syndrome in physicians and nurses in the pediatric onco-hematology service at Pepe Portilla Provincial Pediatric Teaching Hospital in Pinar del Río, Cuba.
Method: this is a cross-sectional and descriptive study. The sample consisted of 15 workers, (11 nurses and 4 doctors) who were working in an uninterrupted method in the onco-hematology service; during the study. The interview and the Maslach Burnout Inventory questionnaire were used.
Results: the presence of burnout syndrome in a high range was observed, predominance of average level in female sex, and older than 40 years. Married and with children, 11 and 20 years of work experience in the service and in the totality of workers carry out night-time jobs. The dimension emotional exhaustion was highlighted in nurses, the depersonalization was presented in an average level and the personal recognition was low, which implies a health problem in the professionals who work in the service of onco-hematology.
Conclusion: the emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and personal recognition at medium levels were the ones presenting the greatest prevalence.
