DENTAL ESTHETICS, MALOCCLUSION, INDEX OF ORTHODONTIC TREATMENT NEED.Abstract
Introduction: malocclusion is, by its own nature, difficult to define. Some authors describe it as those variations in the occlusion, which are not acceptable from an aesthetic and functional point of view. These variations of the occlusion have a multi-factorial origin that includes hereditary, environmental factors, or the combination of both. They can appear from very early ages, being present in all populations with different magnitudes.
Objective: to characterize the need for orthodontic treatment in students from Ignacio Agramonte secondary school by means of dental aesthetics index.
Material and method: an observational, descriptive, cross-sectional study was carried out at Ignacio Agramonte, Consolación del Sur municipality in Pinar del Rio province, from September 2014 to April 2015. The target group was comprised of all the students of the secondary school (410) and the sample included 230 students. Descriptive statistics was used for the analysis of the variables.
Results: the prevalence of malocclusions was represented by 33.4 % of those with severe malocclusion. The convenient treatment predominated. The application of the DAI index and the criteria of professionals coincided with the need for a convenient treatment. The crowding (40.4 %) was more frequent in female sex gender, being more representative the anterior prominence of the upper jaw (35.6 %) in male sex.
Conclusions: severe malocclusion and the need for a convenient treatment prevailed. The criteria of the professional and the application of the index coincided with the need for a convenient treatment. Crowding predominated among females and anterior prominence of the maxilla among males.
