Introduction: the carrier of nasal Staphylococcus aureus has been identified as a potential risk for infections associated with hospital and community assistance.
Objective: to identify nasal and pharyngeal carriers of Staphylococcus aureus in workers at Pepe Portilla Provincial Pediatric Hospital, assessing the antimicrobic susceptibility in vitro to the most prescribed antibiotics during the year 2014.
Method: a development-observational, descriptive and cross-sectional study was conducted including 420 workers as a target group, all of them were directly involved in the assistance of hospitalized patients and the sample comprised 230 workers having the inclusion criteria. The information was collected into a form. To carry out the statistical analysis SPSS package version 11.0 was used. The variables were assessed through the distribution of absolute and relative frequencies as well as simple percentages and crossed tables of frequencies.
Results: 59 carriers of Staphylococcus aureus from the total of the workers included were identified, 51 nasal (22, 2%), 8 pharyngeal (3, 5%) respectively. Nursing personnel represented 43, 1% of nasal carriers followed by physicians with 23, 5% showing multi-resistance to antimicrobic, β-lactam antibiotic had the most common profile of resistance.
Conclusions: the status of the nasal carrier of Staphylococcus aureus was marked in health care workers assisting hospitalized patients in a pediatric hospital.
