Introduction: a type of cancer, which is easy to be detected, with a high degree of recovery and that takes time to develop, is colon cancer.
Objective: to determine the risk perception of colon cancer at Hermanos Cruz polyclinic in Pinar del Río municipality during 2015 and 2016.
Method: an observational, descriptive study was carried out. The target group was constituted by 652 patients, 50 years old and older, and from No. six, 10 and 20 doctor’s offices. An intentional sample of 118 patients was chosen. Theoretical, empirical and statistical methods were applied; the data was collected through a survey. Results: 55 % belonged to the age group between 50 to 54 years, 51 % to female sex and 73 % completed elementary education; 50 % considered it unlikely to be diagnosed with colon cancer; 71.2 % declared not to be in risk age, as the main cause of not being diagnosed with the disease; most perceived family and personal pathological history of cancer as risk factors for the onset of the disease; 80.5 % perceived smoking as a habit associated with colon cancer.
Conclusions: the population studied had no perception of risk for colon cancer. An educational strategy must be created with the purpose of working on the perception of risk factors from early ages; this way to modify the inappropriate lifestyles and guaranteeing a comprehensive health care in the population.
