En 1904, Arneth intentó determinar la edad relativa de los leucocitos neutrófilos circulantes en la sangre de acuerdo con la morfología de los núcleos. Este investigador mostró que los núcleos de los neutrófilos, a partir de la transformación de los mielocitos en la médula ósea, se segmentaban gradualmente y se dividían de acuerdo a la edad en un número cada vez mayor de lóbulos o segmentos. Por tanto, la forma de los núcleos constituye el índice de madurez de la célula. Arneth, en atención a la configuración de los núcleos, dividió a los neutrófilos en cinco grandes grupos y numerosos subgrupos.
