Introduction: colorectal cancer is a frequent disease in older adults with increasing incidence in young patients in several countries of the world.
Objective: to characterize colorectal cancer from the epidemiological and morphological view-point in patients attending Abel Santamaria Cuadrado General Hospital in the period from 2017 to 2018.
Methods: an observational-descriptive and cross-sectional study conducted by the Department of Pathology at Abel Santamaria Cuadrado General Teaching Hospital in Pinar del Rio between 2017 and 2018. From a target group of 245 patients diagnosed with colorectal cancer, a sample of 101 patients was chosen. The analysis allowed obtaining the information of the ballots with histological diagnosis of colorectal cancer that responded to the variables studied, applying descriptive statistics for the analysis of the results.
Results: the age group from 60-69 years (34,7 %) and female sex (57,4 %) predominated. The most affected portion of the colon was ascending colon (39,6 %), adenocarcinoma predominated (95,1 %) and the histological pattern was glandular (27,7 %). Lymphatic infiltration was found (68,9 %).
Conclusions: age, sex, anatomical location, tumor type, histological pattern and lymph node infiltration are the most common characteristics in colorectal cancer.
