Historical trends in the professional training of Optometric and Optical Technologists in Cuba

ABSTRACT
Introduction: professional training is a permanent demand of optometrist-opticians to face challenges in relation to the technological procedures applied.
Objective: to characterize the historical trends of the professional training of technologists in Optometry and Optics in Cuba.
Methods: the dialectic method was applied as a guiding method. From the theoretical level: the historical-logical and as procedures: analysis-synthesis and induction-deduction. From the empirical level: documentary review.
Results: as national trends of professional training of technologists in Optometry and Optics were found in this research: professional training according to the national demands and the health-visual needs of the population; the responsibility of the universities of medical sciences in the professional training of optometrists; demands of upgrading with a contextualized approach and diversification of forms for greater pertinence; incorporation of information and communication technologies in the development of training; and the empowerment of real scenarios for their development.
Conclusions: in correspondence with international postgraduate education trends, as a strategic instrument of development, the professional training of the technologists in Optometry and Optics in Cuba has a propensity to the professional development and to the visual health of the population.
