Knowledge, motivation and perception of scientific publication in student journals at Ciego de Avila University of Medical Sciences

Introduction: publication in scientific journals is the method per excellence for the dissemination of research results. Knowing the potential of the students regarding medical publications is a key element to achieve their research development from the undergraduate level.
Objective: to characterize the level of knowledge and motivation on the subject of medical publications in student scientific journals of students from Ciego de Avila University of Medical Sciences during the period September-October 2021.
Methods: an observational, descriptive, cross-sectional study conducted at Ciego de Avila University of Medical Sciences during the period September-October 2021. The target group comprised 153 students working with the totality of them. The variables were collected by means of an online survey. Descriptive Statistics methods were applied.
Results: female sex predominated (52,9 %), students from the third academic year (30,7 %) and of the medical major (67,3 %), where 90,2 % reported they had never published before. They presented inadequate knowledge regarding: generalities about scientific publication (88,2 %), useful tools for publication (95,4 %) and particularities of student scientific journals (97,4 %). The 81,7 % did not correctly identify the student scientific journals, being preferred, by the rest of the respondents, the journal December 2 as the one of their first choice, recognized by 11 students. A total of 98,7 % published as support for the curriculum and 99,3 % of the students indicated as causes of low scientific productivity
Conclusions: inadequate knowledge in relation to publication in student scientific journals was identified in the respondents, they were unmotivated to publish and most of them did it to enlarge their curriculum.
