Quality of life in the elderly admitted to the Geriatric Service

Introduction: population aging is a subject debated worldwide, and for this reason special attention is paid to this group of elderly people, also known as the third age.Objective: To evaluate the quality of life at the end of statistical life, in elderly people admitted to the Geriatrics service at the Clinical Surgical Teaching Hospital Dr. León Cuervo Rubio during 2019
Methods: a descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted in hospitalized elderly to assess the quality of life at the end of statistical life during 2019, in a universe of 122 patients living at the limits of life expectancy in our country (75-85 years). Absolute frequencies and percentages were calculated, and the percentage method was applied.
Results: it was determined that in the population studied there is a predominance of 59 % of the female sex in the 75-79 years age range. Fifty-four percent of the elderly live accompanied by their relatives, 59 patients (48,3 %) are independent in the basic activities of daily living, and 59 % were independent in instrumental activities, 40 % of them were dependent in more than three or four activities, only 40,1 % of these have a good quality of life.
Conclusions: the high perception of social support reported by the study population is expressed in a higher quality of life in the elderly at the end of statistical life.
