Introduction: subprosthetic stomatitis is the condition with the highest frequency of occurrence in Prosthesis Services, it is of multifactorial etiology and generates inflammatory reactions in the buccal mucosa.
Objective: to characterize subprosthetic stomatitis in older adults of the Family seven Medical Clinic belonging to the Guasimal Health Area of Sancti Spíritus municipality. Methods: a cross-sectional descriptive observational study was carried out from November 2021 to June 2022. The universe was constituted by 163 older adults of the aforementioned health area, the sample consisted of 60 patients with a diagnosis of subprosthetic stomatitis, based on intentional sampling. A form created by the authors was used for data collection, and absolute and relative frequencies were used.
Results: of the affected patients, females predominated (66,7 %) and the 60 to 69 years’ age group (63,3 %), grade II subprosthetic stomatitis (73,3 %) was the most frequent. Lesions in the middle palate (50 %) and poor oral hygiene (51,7 %) predominated. The habit of continuous use prevailed (81,7 %), the condition of the prosthesis was not adjusted (70 %) and 70 % reported a period between five and nine years since the prosthesis was built. The 76,6 % of the older adults had a low self-perception of oral health.
Conclusions: Older adults were more affected by grade II subprosthetic stomatitis, this pathology is fundamentally related to maladjusted prostheses and the continuous use of them.
