Update on diagnosis and treatment of varicocele
Keywords:

Introduction: varicocele is considered the most common problem in the practice of reproductive medicine in the male gender.
Objective: to describe the diagnosis and treatment of varicocele.
Methods: a bibliographic review of the literature was carried out by means of an information search in the databases PubMed, SciELO, and Scopus.
Results: the severity of varicocele is classified from one to three according to clinical examination, highlighting grade 2 and 3, with poor semen quality for possible pregnancies. The most frequently reported symptoms have traditionally been varicose dilatations in the scrotum, painless and uncomfortable. In these cases laparoscopic and open varicocelectomies are performed, with discharge on the same day of surgery.
Conclusion: for an adequate diagnosis it is important to emphasize that the first diagnostic tool is physical examination. Confirmation is made by testicular Doppler ultrasound, which also allows the diagnosis of subclinical varicoceles. There is evidence of a positive effect of treatment on symptoms, sperm parameters and pregnancy rates.
