Introduction: the cranial nerve V is responsible for sensation in the face, including the mouth. Trigeminal neuralgia causes sudden intense pain in the face, which can be shooting, shooting or sharp.
Objective: to describe the therapeutic options in trigeminal neuralgia.
Methods: a literature review was performed by searching the Scopus and PubMed/MedLine databases for information. Clinical trials and meta-analyses published in the last five years were included.
Results: both nerve growth factor and brain-derived neurotrophic factor can cause and treat pain. The occurrence of pain is a biological self-defense mechanism; during treatment, the therapeutic effect of neurotrophic factors can be maintained and pain can be reduced.
Conclusions: based on the results, the classification of trigeminal neuralgia now includes two scientifically based subgroups, idiopathic and classic trigeminal neuralgia. A diagnostic evaluation is necessary in order to offer an adequate treatment.
