Historical background of the training of the Urology Resident Physician in Cuba. Singularity in the competence of Percutaneous Nephrostomy

Introduction: the training of Urology residents in Cuba is rooted in a long tradition of excellence in medical education and in the development of the specialty. Throughout the years, rigorous and complete training programs were established, which allowed training residents to acquire the necessary competences to become experts in the discipline.
Objective: to analyze the historical development of the training of Urology residents in Cuba and its singularity in the Percutaneous Nephrostomy competence.
Methods: a search for information was carried out in which original scientific articles on the subject were consulted, obtained from the PudMed, Medline, EBSCO, Scielo, Scopus databases, as well as from the Google Academic search engine. Interviews were conducted with three prestigious professors in the specialty who provided valuable information. Eighteen bibliographic references were used during the last five years in Spanish and English.
Development: in Cuba, the training of Urology residents is marked by the consolidation of the educational system. This is characterized by the preparation of a professional capable of facing the challenges in the urological field with excellence and commitment.
Conclusions: the history of the training of Urology residents in Cuba reflects a continuous and significant progress. With the introduction of specialized programs and the incorporation of new technologies and advanced techniques such as Percutaneous Nephrostomy, the competences of the residents have been improved.
