Introduction: semiology is a fundamental discipline in the field of dentistry. It consists of the study of the signs and symptoms that appear in the stomatognathic system, allowing the oral health professional to make an adequate diagnosis and treatment plan.
Objective: to argue the importance of Semiology in the field of dentistry.
Methods: a bibliographic review of documents related to the importance and propaedeutics of semiology in dentistry was carried out, and systematic reviews and scientific studies on the subject of review articles from the last five years were also consulted. Since this was a literature review, information was collected from 69 scientific articles and research from reliable and verifiable sources with validity from 2018 to 2023.
Development: it can be said that Semiology in Dentistry is responsible for analyzing and recognizing the clinical manifestations of various oral diseases, as well as evaluating the general state of the oral cavity. This involves carefully observing the visible signs, such as lesions, inflammations, tissue changes, and the symptoms reported by the patient, such as pain, sensitivity or alterations in masticatory function.
Conclusions: semiology is an essential tool in dental practice, which gives the ability to recognize and analyze the signs and symptoms present in the oral cavity. This allows for an accurate diagnosis and an adequate treatment plan, thus ensuring the oral health of patients.
