Introduction: teaching style is a concept that refers to the different qualities exhibited by a teacher that persist in different situations despite the contents of the educational activity.
Objective: to evaluate the orientation of students towards the teaching style of teachers in the medical career of a private university in Ecuador.
Methods: an observational, descriptive, cross-sectional study was developed. A sample of 74 students who voluntarily decided to participate in the study was selected on a non-probabilistic, convenience basis. Descriptive statistical methods were used, respecting medical ethics.
Results: female students were predominant (58,1 %), single (94,6 %), from private schools (51,4 %). The average score of the instrument applied was 69,6 (51-91) points, showing adequate reliability (Cronbach's α=0.643). Once the mean was adjusted according to the adaptation of the test, the participants were classified into two groups, with a predominance of those who preferred the learner-oriented teaching style (55,4 %).
Conclusions: The orientation of the students towards the preference of learning styles was evaluated, being the learner-oriented model the most accepted. In spite of this, no differences were identified as to the causes, since successive evaluations are required to identify the development and change of the preferences of the teaching styles reflected by the students.
