Abstract

Introduction: Eye problems often arise at a young age and frequently go unnoticed. If left untreated, they can lead to vision problems. Therefore, early detection of refractive errors and visual rehabilitation are recommended for children who require it.

Objectives: To present the results of an investigation on visual rehabilitation in first grade children at the Renato Guitart Rosell school, Cárdenas Matanzas.

Methods: A descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted from February 2025 to August 2025 to determine the outcomes of visual rehabilitation in first-grade children at the Renato Guitart Rosell School. The study population consisted of 118 children. Refractive error and visual rehabilitation were assessed in the children.

Results: Myopic astigmatism was the most frequent refractive error, with an incidence exceeding 50%. Surveys of parents corroborated the findings of various authors that the misuse of electronic devices causes myopia in children.

Conclusions: Optometrists and opticians, from primary health care, must identify visual problems in first-grade children and provide visual rehabilitation to children who require it.
