Level of information on oral health and sports practice in adolescents

Introduction: the condition of the stomatognathic system has a direct impact on general health, sports performance and the risk of injury in adolescents who practice sports.
Objective: to analyze the level of information on oral health and sports practice in adolescents from combat sports and those playing with balls at Lino Salabarria Pupo Provincial Initiation School of Sports in Sancti Spiritus province during 2020.
Methods: a descriptive, cross-sectional study was carried out during the month of December 2020. The population consisted of 307 adolescents from combat sports and ball games at Lino Salabarria Pupo Provincial Initiation School of Sports in Sancti Spiritus. A probabilistic and random sample of 53 adolescents was chosen. The survey was used to verify the criteria of adolescents in relation to general knowledge in relation to oral health and sports practice.
Results: male gender predominated with 62,3 % of the total number of those polled. A total of 64,2 % of the adolescents stated that they never use a mouth-guard. A total of 67,9 % and 52,8 % had never received educational talks on dental trauma and oral hygiene, respectively.
Conclusions: the level of information on oral health and sports practice among adolescents involved in combat sports and ball games was inadequate. At present, it is essential to educate athletes from early ages as adolescence about the potential problems of oral disorders and the preventive measures that should be implemented to contribute to the protection of general health and the upgrading of sports practice.
