Introduction: leprosy is a very old disease and, although it is curable, it is still a public health problem in several parts of the world.
Objective: to describe the implementation and results of an educational intervention on leprosy.
Methods: An educational intervention study was carried out on 100 people (61 women and 39 men) belonging to the family medical clinic No 15, of the Francisco Peña Peña Polyclinic, municipality of Nuevitas, Camagüey, period 2020-2021. The research was organised in three stages: diagnosis, intervention and evaluation. The study variables revolved around knowledge about leprosy, signs and symptoms, deformity and disability, transmission and mode, healing, social stigma and rehabilitation. Different research methods were used.
Results: demographically, the age range was between 26 and 49, with a predominance of both sexes, female with 59 % and male with 56,4 %, the knowledge of the different variables under study was found to be between 19,7 and 41 % for the female sex before the intervention, and between 2,6 and 41 % for the male sex, and between 82 and 100 % for both sexes after the programme was implemented.
Conclusion: The study confirmed the importance of educational interventions for active surveillance, early diagnosis and action planning against the disease in all countries in order to reduce or stop its transmission.
