Performance and professional development in the management of ophthalmologic emergencies in primary health care

Introduction: ophthalmologic emergencies are a frequent cause of consultation in primary health care, which is a challenge for these physicians.
Objective: to support the historical background and current situation of the performance and professional development in the management of ophthalmologic emergencies in primary health care.
Material and Methods: an exploratory study was carried out using the documentary review as an empirical method; logical thought processes, induction-deduction and analysis-synthesis were used.
Results: since the materialization of General Comprehensive Physician Program the deficiencies arisen when attending patients with ophthalmologic emergencies have been mainly given by insufficient competences. At present the necessary human and material resources to modify this situation are available.
Conclusions: professional training to manage ophthalmologic emergencies in primary health care is an indispensable key to achieve the excellence to support population’s health-disease process, allowing the upgrade of primary health care professionals.
