Introduction: dental caries is a chronic destructive disease that, if not diagnosed in time, can cause early loss of primary and permanent teeth.
Objective: to determine the prevalence and severity of dental caries in patients between 12 and 35 years of age.
Methods: a descriptive, longitudinal and prospective study was carried out in patients in a dental office in the State of Carabobo, Venezuela, during April-November 2024. Universe: population of this clinic and age range (N=400). Sample: intentional probabilistic sample that included 150 patients according to established inclusion criteria. CPO-D index was calculated to evaluate caries prevalence. Results were described by absolute frequencies, percentages and chi-square test.
Results: male sex predominated (53,3 %) and age group 28-35 years (49,3 %). The main risk factors were cariogenic diet (94 %) and poor oral hygiene (98,7 %). The CPO-D index was very high (8,3) in the 12-19 years age group and high (6,2) in the whole sample. Patients in group III (diseased) predominated with 76,7 % and age group 28-35 years (36 %). According to its progression, acute caries predominated (53,3 %) and molars were the most affected dental group (56,7 %).
Conclusions: the prevalence and severity of caries was high. The high CPO-D index implies the need to implement strategies that promote better oral hygiene, educational programs on oral health, as well as greater access to preventive and restorative dental services.
